Your move dates are set. Now what? Below are some things to think about as you prepare for your upcoming move that will make the whole process run smoothly.
4 Weeks Ahead:
Collect all personal records (health, marriage, school, birth, etc.), valuable paperwork, jewelry and small family heirlooms. Pack these special items separately and make plans for transporting them yourself.
Bring items down from crawl spaces and pull down attics. All items going on the moving truck must be easily accessible to the movers.
Begin sorting items you’re bringing with you to your new home from those you want to get rid of. Plan a garage sale or donate items to a local charity.
3 Weeks Ahead:
Prepare travel for your pets and plants.
Plan meals that use up perishable, frozen, and already opened food items.
Set aside all items you’re planning to take with you until you and your household belongings are reunited. An empty closet with a “Not Going on Truck” note would be a great place to store these items. (Personal items such as jewelry, eyeglasses, contact lenses, etc. should be carried with you. See a complete list of the non-allowable items to see what else cannot go on the truck.)
Remove all items that are permanently affixed or secured to the wall (ex: shelving, drapes, surround sound and TV mounting brackets) so they’re ready for the crew to pack.
2 Weeks Ahead:
On moving day the crew will bring all necessary packing materials based on your survey. To ensure they bring the proper supplies, please let your Move Coordinator know if you have added or removed anything since that survey so the crew arrives adequately prepared.
Clear your schedule for your moving dates so you can be available when the crew is in your home.
1 Week Ahead:
Disconnect all electronics and remove batteries if you are going to storage.
Drain gas and oil from power equipment like lawn mowers and snow blowers leaving only enough for them to start at your new home.
Drain garden hoses.
Dispose of all flammable items (paint, chemicals, aerosol cans) and any other items that can’t be transported.
Start setting aside items you will need to take with you and packing bags to hold you over until your truck arrives at your new home.
Alert your neighbors if the moving truck will be blocking their driveway.
When Scheduling Dates, Keep In Mind…
Pack day is by far the most important day of your move so please make plans to be available to the crew all day to answer any questions and give guidance to the crew.
Plan Plan to have two people available on your delivery date. One will check off items as they come into your home and the other will direct the movers on where to put your belongings.
The movers are not able to let themselves into your home or lock up after they leave each day so someone over the age of 18 will need to be with them throughout the move.

I had two moves to organize, one in-state and one to another state. Jim came to see me, then sent two reasonable quotes. From that point on, Judy kept in contact with packing information, the times for each pick up and delivery, and my final costs. Great move from MI to SC. Rose/Allied was the best price vs Mayflower and United. Salesman Jim Stafford was friendly and helpful, estimated our total weight to within 300 lbs! The driver/crew chief who did our move was Billy and we can’t say enough good thing about him. Very professional and courteous, hard-working, and very careful with our belongings. We had them pack too and they are super cautious and expert packers. Moving is such a pain - but Billy made it as stress-free as possible. I give them my highest recommendation!
