Last Minute Tasks and Packing to Do Before You Move
Your moving day is coming up in a week, but it took you months of planning, groundwork, and hard decisions to get here. Most of the time, the days right before you move are some of the busiest of the whole process. This is because you are packing and getting ready to leave. You can get rid of any anxiety you might be feeling if you finish up any loose ends in the week before you move.
Check out what our expert movers say you should do in the week before moving day.
Get Large Items Packed or Ready to Move
As your moving day gets closer, it’s time to make sure everything is ready to go. Make sure your fridge and freezer are unplugged, defrosted, and given time to dry out so water doesn’t leak onto other things. Before washers and dryers can be moved safely, they need to be unplugged from the wall and things like grandfather clocks need to be fixed. Your mover can probably help you find people to do many of these things.
Before the movers come, don’t forget to take down anything that is permanently attached to your walls. Paintings, towel racks, and curtain rods should all be taken down and put on the floor. You might want to unplug your TVs, computers, and other electronics and pack their cables ahead of time.
Finish Last Minute Packing
If you are packing yourself, you will need to have all of your smaller items ready before the movers come. You should already have most of the things you don’t need in boxes Now is the time to focus on getting the rest of it set up.
One last time, go through your drawers and throw away anything that could break or leak. It’s fine to leave soft things like clothes or blankets. Your mover will be able to move your furniture even if these things are in it.
Don’t forget to look in all the cabinets, closets, storage closets, lockers, the attic, and the shed for things you might have left behind. Also, don’t forget to pack up anything you want to move from your office at work and bring back anything you gave to friends or family.
Pack a Box of Necessities
It’s a good idea to put things in a box that you might need right away in your new home. When you move to a new place, it can take a while to unpack. Having some things set aside and easy to get to can help. Some ideas are to bring a basic tool set, cleaning supplies, kitchen items like paper towels and paper plates, bathroom items like toilet paper, snacks, and easy-to-make foods.
Putting your supply box in a clear plastic container can help you see what’s inside and tell it apart from the other boxes you’ll be moving. If this box is too big to fit in your car, ask your movers to load it last and unload it first so that you can get to it quickly.
